Weekend Box Office: Mockingjay Grabs #1, Doesn’t Quite Catch Fire

While The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 easily scored the biggest debut of 2014, the film fell short of the series’ previous installment Catching Fire. Granted, the new flick earned $123 million this weekend. However, the franchise’s last installment earned $158 million during its debut weekend in 2013, and the original Hunger Games movie earned $152 million in 2012. Meanwhile, Disney’s Big Hero 6 landed at a distant second place by earning an estimated $20.1 million during its second weekend. And Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar landed in third place with $15.1 million earned.
